My Students

In my English courses, we study grammar through song lyrics. We begin by identifying the parts of speech of the words then analyze the clause structures. I usually choose ballads with themes that reflect both the current literature and non-fiction class study. Sometimes the students choose, too.

While my English courses incorporate song lyrics as poetry and for grammatical analysis, my social science classes study music throughout the ages as representative of culture and technology, tracing the blues from Robert Johnson, Son House, and Rev.

Gary Davis through Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and John Lee Hooker (and others) to contemporary music. For one example, Robert Johnson’s Me and The Devil Blues provides a good sample of acoustic delta blues as well as a compelling narrative in a compact format. The music can be broken down into a simple A-C-D-E pattern for beginners, yet Johnson’s performances are very complex and good models for advanced study. Likewise, although the sentence structure and vocabulary of the lyrics are relatively simple, the meaning of the narrative is complex and highly symbolic.

My Project

This request is for a special kind of keyboard and speaker combination, and they are expensive because they are special. This keyboard is a small portable Hammond organ. It’s not the full pro setup which replicates the former B3 system, but it is a drawbar organ with the new digital version of the old tonewheel organ sounds. The Leslie amp includes rotary speakers, which means they spin around inside the speaker cabinet. This creates a unique analog special effect based on the Doppler effect that only live performance can produce. Together, Hammond organs and Leslie amps have been used create a great deal of electric blues and rock music. Playing styles and musical progressions developed out of gospel and blues then became used in rock. We don’t have many students playing gospel at our school, but it is our school’s goal that all 9th graders take piano and learn to read music, and we do have many student bands that admire and play electric blues and classic rock.

Not many of our student bands have yet incorporated powerful keyboards into their repertoire, so this organ, amp, stand, and bench will not only be used in classroom studies of how music reflects culture and history, but they will also be used to empower students through art in their own performances as well, bringing together their classroom lessons with their self-directed extracurricular pursuits.
