My Students

I work in a small yet diverse high school in East Harlem, NY. My students come from a variety of cultures, life experiences and academic histories, but they all have a desire to learn and deserve a quality education. Nearly all of my students come from low-income households going to a school in a building with no windows can further disconnect them from the world around them.

Some of my students have had inauthentic or negative experiences with science classes, which has left them disinterested or with misconceptions of science.

This can unfortunately affect their performance on the NYS mandated Living Environment Regents Exam. Labs are typically their favorite part of science class as it gives them an opportunity to "get their hands dirty" and apply things they are learning into a real life context, while also having some fun. My goal is to provide my students with learning experiences and opportunities that will engage them in STEM and provide them access to career pathways that will impact their lives and their communities.

My Project

Topics of Ecology, including food webs and food chains are major concepts expected for all High School students in New York State to know. Many of these concepts can be difficult for students to grasp in urban settings as there is a large disconnect from the nature around them. Even then, there are very few examples of "predator-prey" relationships they can identify from their surrounding environment, Harlem, NY.

Lab activities have the ability of engaging even the most disinterested students and also cater to visual and kinesthetic learners.

Owl pellet dissections place my students in the role of "Ecologists" and help build their understanding by providing context with a strong example and investigating the relationships in an ecosystem through a hands-on learning experience. It will also expose them to the role of the digestive system in various organisms. This resource will be used in my Living Environment (Biology) classes and will support my student's success on the required NYS Regents Exam.
