My Students

Do you remember taking a mental journey back in time as you read through your Social Studies textbook?

My students are fifth graders in a Title One school.

My students love Social Studies, but they dislike their textbooks! They would much rather talk about the historical time period or look at pictures discussing what they see--their questions seem to come alive once the textbook is closed. They're able to envision different perspectives--life as a Patriot or the feelings of King George during the American Revolution.

My Project

Teachers do so much planning at home. The laptop will assist me in planning and creating SmartBoard lessons that transport students into the past. I'll be able to plan virtual field trips that meet the Social Studies state standards for my grade. Virtual field trips help students draw upon their knowledge before they study a time period, as well as culminate a unit. By taking these virtual field trips, students are able to visit places that they may not have an opportunity to see, like Colonial Williamsburg or the Erie Canal. In addition to virtual field trips, I can create SmartBoard lessons on the laptop that highlight the social studies curriculum. Students are able to interact with the SmartBoard, play games that reinforce the current social studies topics, listen to real life accounts from those people who've lived through certain time periods, as well as review the topics before taking a test. Students need to be engaged in the content for true learning to happen.

Pearl Buck once said, "If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday." Unfortunately Social Studies has dwindled from most curriculum, as standardized testing takes center stage.

Please help my students experience the importance of historical events using the laptop and bring Social Studies back into the classroom!
