My Project

Reading Crying in H Mart offers high school students a powerful lens to understand empathy by immersing them in the deeply personal story of Michelle Zauner’s grief, cultural struggles, and identity. Zauner's reflections on her relationship with her late mother and their shared Korean heritage reveal the emotional complexities of family, loss, and belonging. By reading about her experiences navigating cultural traditions and reconciling her mixed-race identity, students are invited to consider the importance of understanding others' emotions and experiences, particularly those that may differ from their own. This firsthand perspective encourages students to reflect on their own relationships and appreciate the unique cultural narratives that shape people's lives.

The memoir also fosters a deeper understanding of cultural identity by exploring how food, language, and traditions are integral to personal identity and connection.

This book will support our students as they create a school wide cultural fair to represent the diverse population that is WOIS. Zauner’s journey of reconnecting with her Korean roots through food and visits to H Mart emphasizes how cultural practices can preserve memories and shape one's sense of self. For high school students, this narrative highlights the value of honoring one’s heritage while navigating the complexities of identity in a multicultural world. Through Zauner’s story, students learn that cultural identity is not static but ever-evolving, and empathy is essential in appreciating both their own cultural experiences and those of others.
