This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This project will give my students the chance to explore aquatic science and genetics in a hands-on way they’ve been craving. Right now, they’re passionate about learning how to care for tanks, breed fish, and study water chemistry, but we simply don’t have the materials to make it happen. The axolotl setup is something they’ve been asking for, and the casper and zebra fish will be key to teaching genetics in a way that’s engaging and real for them.

My students deserve more than just lectures—they need the chance to learn by doing.

These materials will allow us to test water quality, analyze fish behavior, set up habitats, and conduct longterm studies. What’s even more amazing is that this aquatics room has become a safe space for so many kids in our school, not just the ones in my class. They come here when they need a break, some calm, or just to connect with the tanks and the life inside them.

This project isn’t just about teaching science, honestly. It’s about giving students from a low-income community the opportunity to explore their passions, learn new skills, and feel proud of what they accomplish. This is our chance to influence the future city kids in awareness of the environment and the care for the species within it. Everything is interconnected - even for city students. Science is all around.
