Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at my school are widely diverse and have a variety of interests, learning abilities, and talents. They do share one trait- the need for more high quality, engaging, and current reading material. The 8th graders served at this middle school campus often have limited access to age appropriate and relevant books, so updating our reading curriculum will help spark interest in the subject.
This project aims to get kids engaged with stories by asking the question: How is the same story different when it is offered in a different medium?
The book club unit is designed to encourage critical thinking and creative exploration. By reading the source material and watching the cinematic adaptation, students will have the opportunity to analyze character development, plot variations, and the overall interpretation of the story. These exercises foster higher-order thinking skills, enabling students to make connections, identify symbolism, and develop a deeper understanding of the narrative's themes. Such analytical skills are invaluable not only in literature but also in various aspects of their academic and personal lives.
In a world where technology often takes precedence, nurturing a love for literature is a gift that lasts a lifetime. By supporting our classroom's book club unit, you are investing in the future of our students and helping to shape critical thinkers and lifelong learners. Your generosity will resonate far beyond the classroom walls, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of these young minds.
