My Students

I am determined to start a steel pan program band for my students. My students come from various backgrounds, mostly African and Caribbean American. Many are low performing academically and really need support on every level. The students have low attendance rates which affects their academics and ultimately their graduation rate. They are smart, hungry and talented with a desire to succeed. They desperately need and want music to express themselves. I know this will help them to focus better academically, as well as be a source of motivation for them to look forward to school everyday!

My Project

School attendance as well as social skills are critical to achievement! Many of our students live in challenging environments that rob them of motivation to attend school on a consistent basis. These Steel Pans will show the students that we are serious about starting a Steel Pan Band, and training them to become musicians. When we have enough to make a full Steel Pan Band, we will begin performing. Once the students have that experience of performing, I know without a doubt, they will have experienced a wonderful sense of accomplishment and will be ready for more. This will positively impact their attendance as well as all their academic studies.
