This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a 5th-grade Math and Science teacher in South Bronx, NY. For the past two years, our city and school communities have been hit and hurt by many unexpected changes that have forever altered our lifestyles and routines. Despite our best intentions and efforts to support our students, we continue to face challenges resulting from deepened learning gaps, limited socialization, and a reduced education budget.

I love my students' can-do attitudes toward academic barriers and taxing home circumstances.

Ninety-five percent of my students receive free lunch, and nearly 1/3 of them live in the NYC shelter system. Recently, our Mayor announced cutting 215 million dollars from our city education budget. As a direct result, we might have to use outdated textbooks, endure larger classroom sizes, operate fewer extracurricular activities, and be unable to provide classroom supplies to those who need them the most. In the end, student learning suffers. Educators like me are turning to fund sites like Donorchoose to get what we need to ensure materials to create equitable understandings for our students.

For this particular project, we are asking for supplies to build an ongoing learning experience that involves live fish and microscopic organisms (with the help of a microscope) that coexist in their living space. Students will engage in a STEM learning journey that closely involves knowledge of mathematics and science, which might eventually lead to a sustainable model of artificial habitat using the battery bank, lego set, and fan (fake environment agent).
