Students will learn how to grow their own vegetables from seeds. The high school students will invite the Pre-K through 8th grade students to help with the entire process from planting of seeds to transplanting to watering and harvesting what is grown. Students will be able to eat the vegetables grown. The vegetables grown will be used on the salad bar in the school cafeteria during the school year and during the summer months, the vegetables will be donated to either families of the school district or given to the local food bank.
Gardening allows students to take charge of their food and allows them to make healthy choices for their diets.
Students will learn about healthy soil by composting items from the school cafeteria and items brought from home. The compost will be added to the soil to make it healthier. The compost will allow plants to develop healthier roots into the soil contributing to healthier growth. Students will also maintain worm bins. The humus in earthworm castings helps increase soil's water retention, improve soil aeration and anchor plant nutrients that would otherwise leach away with water. Castings also feed beneficial soil microorganisms that produce, store and slowly release plant nutrients into your soil to feed plants.
Students love hands on engaging activities. Having an activity where students will be growing and caring for plants will allow students to apply the subjects of science, math, and reading into a real life context. Growing their own vegetables to be used in the school cafeteria will also encourage healthy eating.
