My Students

My students meet and exceed my expectations every day, but our lack of materials makes it hard for them to continue to move forward. While our courses are focused on instrumental music, I stress musical literacy across all genres. Our bands play music ranging from Eminem to Beethoven.

My high school students come from all over the South Bronx and most are Latino and African-American.

The music program reaches just over 60 students this year (roughly 25% of the school's population), and is growing steadily. While 96% of the Class of 2014 graduated from high school in 4 years and 96% of those students enrolled in college, 35% of their families earn less that $15,000 per year and almost 50% of children in our area live in poverty. 94% of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunch. My music students are highly motivated to learn and push their abilities every day, but they are limited by our lack of resources. This project will help more of our students to participate in music.

My Project

Proper equipment is vital to a music program. My 5 bass students all share one bass guitar, so in one class period, each student is only actively playing for 10-12 minutes. A second bass guitar will provide my students with many more opportunities to practice and improve their skills. Several of our clarinet players are currently using rubber bands. Using the wrong equipment prevents the students from developing proper technique and makes it harder for them to play, leading to frustration and lack of motivation. New clarinet ligatures will help our students improve their skills and play the instrument properly. The tuners will help all of my students learn about playing in tune. Our drummers use fold-up chairs, which are not the correct height for the drum set. This forces improper posture and technique that not only makes drumming difficult, but could lead to injury. A New drum throne will provide a safe and comfortable playing environment for them.

New equipment for my students will provide more opportunities for learning.

Instead of watching someone play bass for the majority of class time, they will get to perform! A new throne will set our drummers up for success and ligatures will allow our clarinet students to play properly! As in all classrooms, a music program without the proper equipment will have difficulty growing and progressing. This project will provide our students with the tools they need for success.
