My Students

Reluctant, dormant, unmotivated, remedial, below-level - each of these words, at one time or another, has been used to describe the type of student I work with daily, but I think differently. I think my students simply need to be exposed to great teen literature!

My students range in age from 13 to 16 years old, and most have struggled with reading skills since entering school at age four.

Many will admit that they've never finished a book on their own, and many will tell me that they never plan to do so. Unfortunately, my students have never experienced the joy of being captured by a plot or a special character. For them, reading is a chore. My students and I are housed in an eighth-grade center, and approximately 1/3 of all 8th graders in my district receive special reading services.

My Project

I am always looking for ways to add to my classroom library. I want to provide my students with easy access to a variety of exciting books written by authors I know they'll love if they just give them a chance. Because my students' previous reading experiences are mostly negative, I allow them to choose what they read. I want to offer them a pleasurable reading experience, and I allow class time every day for independent reading. Nancie Atwell, renowned literacy leader, also believes in frequent, voluminous reading as part of the everyday curriculum to build stronger, engaged readers. Of this, she says, "[Students] build fluency, stamina, vocabulary, confidence, critical abilities, habits, tastes, and comprehension." This project, if funded, would allow me to get more "never-fail" books into the hands of my students. Many of my requested titles are part of a series, like the Morganville Vampires Series, so if a student gets hooked by Book #1, he/she will have another book waiting for them when they finish.

By donating to this project, you will be helping me build a classroom library that can be used to introduce my students to a wider range of literature with attention-grabbing plots written by great young adult authors.

YOU can turn a dormant reader into a voracious one!
