My Students

Remember when you were in school and the teacher played records or maybe cassette tapes? Unfortunately, that is not such a distant memory for my students who learn in classrooms filled with outdated equipment.

My students live in a busy, working class neighborhood.

Their school is a medium-sized, urban elementary school that has been educating the neighborhood children for over a century. Like all kids their age, they love technology and want all the latest gadgets. Unfortunately, their parents don't have the extra money to buy computers and video games, and our school doesn't have the budget to keep up-to-date with technology.

My Project

I have a lot of struggling readers and second language learners in my class. For years, we have used tapes of stories and chants and songs to help strengthen their skills and give them access to the content of the lessons. Now, however, those tapes are beginning to age and break, and our tape player is on its last leg. An iPod would allow me to share stories and songs that I have downloaded. Kids could practice and recite English learning chants, and read along with books on the iPod. Additionally, we could download educational apps that will excite and inspire the students.

As teachers, we want the best for our students.

Part of that is providing them with access to the latest in educational and technological resources. I want to prepare my class to compete with students from all walks of life. This equipment will go a long way toward realizing that goal. Any assistance that you could give us would be greatly appreciated.
