This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What do I love about my students? I love just about everything, but what I love the most is the stories they tell. I love listening to and reading about life through their young eyes. Growing up on a border town where the Mexican culture is huge in their lives has given them much to experience even if they they have never left Brownsville. Being bilingual is a large part of their life’s and also something that I times is there biggest obstacle when it comes to the demands of the state mandated tests. As their writing teacher it is my mission to open their world up even more and show the reading and writing, can take them anywhere and let them be anyone or anything they want to. I also emphasize the fact that they DO have stories to tell, and we DO want to read about them! My goal is to give them as much exposure to the world around them without leaving the walls around them.
My Project
When students make a connection between what is being taught and something in their lives, the learning begins. In my 18 years of teaching, one thing I have learned is that student learn best when it's relate able. They also like to be entertained! For this reason, I have chosen class sets of novels that touch current themes in my 4th graders lives. Novels that have characters connect with all my students. Through novels my students not only build on their reading skills, but they also are able to see good writing demonstrated. I can show how author's crafts like using figurative language, description, imagery, word choice, sentence structure, voice, and so on. The students can use what they read and apply it to their own writing.
