My Students

Each year as my students walk into their new 5th grade classroom, it is a known fact that this is their last year as elementary students. They do come in as young, playful 4th graders, but over the course of the year they grow up, have minds of their own and most importantly have a voice in what they are doing. These children I received this year have matured and are finding themselves each day. They are becoming independent learners and mastering concepts each day! Some of these kids have overcome some incredible odds to show strength in their learning.

My 5th graders are curious, creative and clever!

Here in Southern California, we have a reputation of being beautiful and warm. Well, that really doesn't explain the weather, it describes the kids! They come to school to be safe and get that feeling of belonging. Poverty or not, they come ready to learn. They come with the attitude of, "Today I will learn something new!" These children do not let their situation define their future!

My Project

These IPads will make a huge difference in my students learning. First, just having them in the classroom will be helpful. Our school has 2 Chromebook carts which are strictly used for testing or for that one day your class gets to go to the computer lab. We have to check out iPads each day, if they’re not all gone. So, with my 3 desk tops and 2 iPads 1 group can be working on them. The kids have endless projects they want to do. This class loves to research! My students will be researching the U.S. Constitution and the bill of rights for ELA and social studies. With the iPads they are able to compare and contrast the bill of rights and form opinions about each one. In addition, the iPads will help with state testing. There is a site that is so kid friendly (and teacher friendly) that it will directly help with questions like the ones on SBAC. And finally, the one I cannot wait to teach them is how to create a power point presentation. I want to hold a parent night for kids to present their projects. At school is the only place most of these kids have access to technology. Their faces light up when group time comes and are hoping we were able to check out some technology. Even 2 iPads would help because we do have our 3 desktops without a printer. However, these are the kind of kids that are grateful for anything. They know, they’re old enough to understand what they get sometimes of this magnitude they feel that feeling of pure appreciation!
