My Students
My students are fifth graders on the Northside of Richmond, Virginia at a Title I school. They reentered the in-person school world and experiences after the last 20 months of this crazy new world we are living in!
They come to school ready to learn and find out the answers to questions they wonder about every day.
They're passionate about all things animals and science, curious about history, and ready to take on the challenges of math and reading head-on.
My Project
Due to class sizes and COVID protocols, I recently was moved from first grade to fifth grade. I got a new group of 14 fifth grade students who all love reading. We just recently finished Esperanza Rising which made me realize - my classroom library is severely lacking in age appropriate books for my new students.
While my fifth graders enjoy reading from the selection that they currently have, they ask every day when we are going to get books about kids their age.
They want to be able to read about people and characters that they relate to, go on adventures that last more than a couple pages. While Curious George and all of the other first grade characters all have a time and a place, the time with them is quickly coming to an end.
I have chosen a plethora of chapter book series - both fiction and non-fiction - to revamp my classroom library with your help. These kids are already going through so much with their class change and adjustments to a sort of hectic school year that they deserve to have a classroom where they walk in and feel like their needs and wants are being met. They want to read books that aren't picture books. They want to read chapter books. They want to go on those adventures that only well written chapter books can take you on.
