This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The fifth grade students are only ten and eleven years old, but as immigrants from Latin America to Brooklyn or children of immigrants, they have experienced and/or been exposed to more culture and change than many adults. They are full of observations, insights, and stories that reflect all they have seen and heard in their few years, yet they rarely get the opportunity to express their knowledge and creatively due to limited resources.

This school to museum project is an opportunity for them to educate the school and community in an engaging, creative, and student centered way.

Students will be taking on the roles of curator and artist to turn our library into a museum exhibition about how culture changes when people move from one land to another. Students have chosen which aspect of cultures they want to focus on (education, food, way of life, clothes, and music) and what kind of art they will create to represent it.

The items in this list will make it possible for them to create lookbooks using cameras, print outs of clothing they research, &portfolio books showcasing how different cultures influence fashion, illustrated fusion menus using the printer paint markers and card stock teach about food and culture, conduct interviews with classmates and community members about their immigration experience with the recorders, design album covers for multicultural musicians using paint markers and printed out canva designs, and create models comparing schools in different countries using the clay, felt, tissue paper, and plastic boxes.

They are full of ideas and ready to work, they just need the materials to make their ideas a reality. With these resources they can create something that will prompt everyone to think more about how much culture evolves and the many ways cultures can connect despite appearing different.
