“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.” Dr. Maria Montessori, 1937.
Our school is a Title I Montessori school in the inner-city of Indianapolis with a diverse population of learners.
I have the privilege of working with 22 magnificent 1st and 2nd graders in a Montessori classroom. My students are inner-city, high-poverty children who are embarking on their journey as Montessori learners in Indianapolis Public Schools. Students bring their rich cultural backgrounds to school, as well as a variety of languages to share the wealth of knowledge they already attain. I share in the joys of growing their expertise in the many fields of mathematics, language arts, cultural studies,
At school, I work to ensure that my students' educational needs are met, but I can't do it without the help of the community supporting our next leaders, innovators, and thinkers. Montessori's philosophy is that children learn best through their innate drive to learn new things, and we provide this with hands-on materials and the cosmic approach.
My Project
This year our students show a large interest in botany. Since they show this excitement, I would like to be able to grow plants with them throughout the year. We are asking for your help getting an AeroGarden, so that we can grow plants year round inside. We will start with lettuce and discuss topics such as seeds, environmental needs, seasons, and health. These lessons all 'STEM' from our botany curriculum.
We cannot create observers by saying observe, but by giving them the power and the means for this observation and these means are procured through education of the senses.
-Maria Montessori
As this topic progresses in our class, we will dig deeper into other types of plants, the geography of plants, and utilize graphing, comparison, and art.
