This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Right now, your brain is working hard as you read this description. Have you ever wondered.. How do neurons actually work? That is the question we will explore with the SpikerBox in our Neuroscience class this year.

A Spiker Box is a small device that amplifies biological signals, specifically the action potentials of neurons.

When connected to a device running an app, Spiker Box allows you to hear and see real-time electrical "spikes" of live invertebrate neurons.

We will use the SpikerBox in several activities (with roach legs!) to demonstrate how neurons detect and respond to stimuli (touch, sound, electricity, temperature). Students can also design their own experiments to test how various factors may affect how neurons respond to stimuli. Rest easy, roaches can regenerate limbs so no roaches will be harmed in these activities!

Neuroscience education in high school is very limited - most students may only learn anatomical brain structure without ever actually understanding the fundamental dynamics of how the brain actually sends and receives signals. By donating to this project, you will ensure students gain a deeper, more realistic understanding of brain and neuron function in an engaging and hands-on format. These resources are reusable, so we can continue to perform this lab for several cohorts, therefore the true impact will be far more than 60 students.
