My Students

"I'm an author," a student once said. We all identify with specific roles. A writer, a mother, a football player or an artist. School can be the first place where children discover their hidden identities, but current budget cuts are preventing me from providing these experiences for my students.

My students are a lovely, motivated and curious bunch of second and third grade children who live in an urban area.

Coming from mostly Latino backgrounds, they often struggle with comprehension, production and the acquisition of the English language. Having tactile experiences, particularly through the arts, can help to close these gaps. Furthermore, when they are provided with meaningful and purposeful writing experiences, like publishing their own work, that allow them to apply what they have learned, their language growth is phenomenal. I have visited suburban schools where the hallways and bulletin boards are filled with published work written by the students. Children truly "see" themselves as authors and they are confident in their abilities as writers. I want my students to have the same level of confidence and to see their hard work beautifully displayed around the school. Last January, I ran out of markers and the supply was not replenished by the school.

My Project

"Real" authors take their work through the writing process regularly. They create drafts, edit and revise these drafts, confer with other professionals in the field about their writing and then celebrate their published work. Through my years of teaching, I have noticed that all students (no matter what background) can become engaged as writers and even come to love writing. The secret ingredient necessary to make this happen is "choice." Students need to be able to make choices as they engage in writing. Choice brings learning to life. With your help, my students will be given better choices. Picture one of my second graders choosing to cut out a part of their story, and with the glue and glue brushes, paste it in a place that helps the story to make better sense. Imagine the smiles on my students faces as they use the pencils to help a friend edit their work or choose just the right color marker to put the final touches on their story illustration.

As their educator, I can give them the real-life experience of taking a piece of writing from a draft to a published piece and then have their work celebrated.

Providing my students with a variety of artistic materials like markers, glue, glue brushes and pencils will ignite their true potential as authors and illustrators. So, close your eyes and imagine the squeals of delight when a student can say "Abuelo, I am a real-life author and illustrator. Look, at this book I just wrote."
