My Project

Within my high school level robotics course and robotics club, the students implement the engineering design process emanating with prototypes. Using a CAD platform, students have the opportunity of designing their 3D models and printing these using our 3D printers. The printers we have within the classroom were purchased in 2016 and are now beyond their useful life.

3D printing plays an integral role within my robotics course and my after school robotics club allowing my students to capture their digital design as a physical print.

Members of my robotics club are part of my competitive FTC (First Tech Challenge) team. Each year, students use the 3D printers to design elements for their annual competitive robot. Our robotic team has made through to PA FTC Championship now for two consecutive years. Also, this year we just found out that our school district will no longer providing any funds for robotics.

Within my robotics course, FOR EXAMPLE, one of the units, Robotics and Water, students in small groups, are challenged to design, and print a ship. They have to consider how they can harvest the wind as their source of energy, and how their ships can carry the largest load (plastic cubes). With the sporadic functionality of our present printers, it can be disappointing and stressful when the printers fail in some aspect of the print.
