Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income area of New York City, my 7th grade students face struggles in and out of the classroom. Despite the daily challenges they deal with, my students are creative, innovative, hard-working, and help to create a safe, hardworking, and happy classroom environment.

My students welcome the rigor of 7th grade and are not only unafraid to ask for help when needed, but are always ready to offer assistance to a classmate who needs extra guidance.

My Project

The 7th grade Social Studies curriculum focuses on the colonization of America and what daily life was like for these colonists. My students recently completed a project in which they made a brochure "advertising" a historic colony. This included details about who founded the colony and when, reasons why Europeans sought refuge here, and what economy made the colony a success. Many of my students focused on historic New York.

This project will give my students a chance to step into the lives of historic New Yorkers that, until this point, they can only read about and imagine.

In this program, students learn how our waterways shaped our history and still shape our lives. Students will get to raise sails, measure water quality, and learn about the ecology of New York harbor, and interpret navigational charts.

Our students don't have many opportunities to experience science outside of the classroom. This is a rare opportunity for students to learn about the aspects of science in nature that can be found in the city that they call home.
