My Students

My 4th and 5th graders are rambunctious warrior-scholars who persevere through many social, economic, and emotional struggles and trauma in order to be taken seriously in the broader societal academic conversation. My students have been marginalized, underserved and disengaged in their schooling experiences prior to coming to our school. I work hard to spark the minds that will change the world. These Warrior-Scholars WILL make the difference because they matter, and are ready to prove it. They light up when they get to engage in hands on projects, and shine brightest when challenged to step up and perform, present, or become leaders.

My Project

Students are learning from the vast amounts of media and digital platforms. TikTok and YouTube, and various social media platforms are highly influential. This project will allow my classes to critically develop their critical literacy skills rooted in standards based, digital literacy, and digital citizenship. Our goal is to have students learn to produce content that will show positive outcomes and empower our students towards transformative actions and self-development. They will research, learn, and create media using the iPads (video recording, content creation) and MacBook (video editing, content creation). With the tools provided, students will be able to critically analyze forms of media, persuasion, and media influence in "educating" youth towards controlling their thoughts and actions. On top of that, misrepresentation and a lack of representation for Black Indigenous Folks of Color is a major issue in various media forms. Using the requested technology, students will be able to work on Public Service Announcements (PSAs), mini-documentaries based on their communities and themselves, Youth-led podcast, curate a community-minded website, as well as create graphic designed content: posters for school and community, slideshow presentations for classrooms and communities, as well as our digital platforms. Our students have always had information and notions about them and their communities force fed to them through media. This project will allow them to genuinely enter the conversation, validate their voices and experiences, as well as allow them to take ownership of their learning.
