This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach technology for all the grades (Extended Transitional Kindergarten through Grade 5) at a public school rated at 74% socioeconomically disadvantaged students (many free/reduced lunches). I am a first-year teacher so I'm just now setting up this classroom thus I have posted multiple projects.
Oakland students are curious, enthusiastic, and creative.
They are ready to get hands-on in their learning technology and I want to craft the best learning opportunities I can then get out of the way of their genius.
My Project
Makey Makey is a device that simplifies passing simple input to a computer. It's like a mini keyboard with arrow keys, a space bar, and a mouse click. You can devise various ways to trigger the keys and click by making circuit connections using physical objects and your own body! The classic example is making circuits using bananas: hook up the wires then touch the bananas to play a computer piano!
This is a next step in the development of students understanding of computing.
Students will build on their previous experience with circuits to focus on the idea of input to a computer. Working with Makey Makey will introduce them to the Scratch programming language.
