This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first graders are intelligent, creative, and curious. They have grown so much this year and I can't believe they will soon be going to the second grade! This spring, I am hoping to once again raise butterflies in the classroom. I have done this project several times and I love seeing how much this hands-on experience means to kids.

Observing a butterfly's metamorphosis is something students will always remember.

It is amazing to see how the caterpillars form their chrysalides (inside of which they almost entirely liquefy!) and then emerge as a butterfly. We observe how each creature moves, eats, and grows before we release them into their natural habitat.

Having the butterflies in the classroom has so many benefits. Students learn new vocabulary and scientific observation skills. They develop their compassion and responsibility as we care for the butterflies during their time with us. And through loving the butterflies, children come to appreciate nature and understand the importance of being good stewards of the environment.
