Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know the frustration of a slow computer? My students do - everyday! The district superintendent donated an interactive whiteboard to my classroom: WONDERFUL! However, staff laptops are unreliable, slow, and fussy. My own Mac is so old and slow it can only run one program at a time. HELP!

Students in my classes come from countries all over the world - Bangladesh, Jamaica, Guinea, Mexico, Dominican Republic.

About half are English Language Learners and several have special education needs. Most students live at or below the poverty level, and several live in some of the worst neighborhoods in the Bronx but travel up to 1.5 hours to attend my school. These students WANT a good education. They WANT to go to college. They are rich in cultural and ethnic identity, however they struggle to reach national academic benchmarks of achievement. My school is a unique high school in the Bronx. We are truly an international community of teachers and students. Our students hail from over 40 countries and our staff have all spent significant time abroad, mostly as Peace Corps volunteers. We strive to support all students in meeting and exceeding academic standards so that they can go to college and succeed in America or wherever their paths take them.

My Project

An interactive whiteboard is a wonderful tool. I can manipulate notes and flipcharts, show videos, make recordings for the class, and immediately access the Web - all in front of a class full of awestruck students! Polar bears come alive! We travel to the Amazon! We track snowstorms in real time! With this tool, all the world is at our fingertips. Unfortunately, this technology requires a laptop as the interface. Staff laptops are slow and unreliable. Teachers cannot bring them home to work on. As a result, I have put much wear and tear on my Mac, which is now slow and lacks memory. A netbook will streamline SO MUCH OF my lessons as well as the preparation required for teaching. I dream of the day I can prepare and practice lessons anywhere AND deliver them from the same computer (no pesky file transfer or laptop checkouts!). My lessons will FLOW. Precious time saved so that students can actually benefit from this great learning tool, rather than sit through technical difficulties.

An interactive whiteboard is an invaluable teaching tool.

It has so much potential. As a science teacher in NYC, a particular challenge is exposing students to nature, one example at a time. With this tool, I can provide multimedia examples of unknown animals, foreign lands, and the microscopic. But only with a working laptop computer! In this case, your donation will help the 120+ students I teach every day PLUS it will greatly streamline my preparation and planning time.
