Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science from a text book can be intriguing. Hands on science can be life changing. As students in a Title 1 school, my students don't have many opportunities for true hands on experiences. This activity will not only bring together their studies, but reward them for their hard work.

I inherited my biology students just before Thanksgiving, when their teacher left them in the middle of the year.

When I first came into the classroom, I found some amazing children who were complacent, at best, about their science curriculum. As a Title 1 school in a largely agricultural area, we have students from all walks of life. These kids were over a quarter behind their peers. Over the past six weeks, we have slogged through a huge amount of material together, and while they are not quite caught up, they are testing on a level comparable with their peers. Through no fault of their own, we will be moving through our curriculum at a fast pace. We don't have the resources for many hands-on activities, but I hope to be able to offer this dissection to them as a reward for their hard work when we catch up to their peers at the end of the 3rd 9 weeks. As a new teacher fresh out of 10+ years in the lab, I know activities like this hook kids to science for life.

My Project

Following their review of the human body systems, this dissection will serve as a culminating activity. Students will be able to compare the various body systems (skeletal, reproductive, circulatory, etc.) in the frogs to what they have learned in class. Moreover, students will be able to make ties to comparative anatomy, evolution, and populations--essentially the majority of the topics they have covered this year. For many students this will be the first opportunity they have ever had to actively participate in a dissection. Two students will share a single frog and will complete the activity together. This hands on experience will not only solidify the concepts they have learned in the curriculum--it will empower them to continue scientific inquiry in the future.

The biology teachers at my school have been seeking funding for frogs for several years, to no avail due to budgetary constraints.

I still remember, vividly, when I dissected a frog in my high school biology class, back before my students were even born. An opportunity to do a dissection such as this will not only tie their instruction together nicely, it will make a lasting impact on their futures. Science is, at its root, a hands-on study. What better way to instill a love of inquiry?
