My Students

Here we are-at the precipice of a new school year. My students are returning - and some are proudly bringing siblings! The eagerness and excitement of a new school year beckons ~ and or many reasons. For a large number of the kids- school is solace. And in the current political and social strife that our country is facing, school represents both a haven, and an escape.

The kids are complex~fueled by the knowledge that academics is their most viable path to success, but also, often deflated by the realistic path they walk - through the poverty-stricken neighborhood in which our school is nestled.

Their grit is amazing, and it is my most fervent hope that I can bolster their efforts by delivering sound curriculum in an engaging and creative manner. DonorsChoose.org allows me to supplest district mandated content, and make school actually fun!

My Project

Imagine the subtle fear that undergirds children who know how current immigration and racism mores are wreaking havoc on our country. Muse about the gun violence and mass shooting that plague our days, and then place yourself in the mind of a child, who is both vulnerable and defenseless. School used to be a haven, but that supposition is fading. The schoolyard is a place of respite.

A Friendship Bench, one that beckons and welcomes children to find and meet new friends, while listening to soothing music, can be a source of solace in our uncertain days.

To this end, the benches requested will serve that purpose, and, coupled with child-centered music, played on Bluetooth speakers via the programming of teachers, will offer each child a space and place for wonderful memories.

We cannot totally protect our children from the realities of today's violence, but we can certainly make school a place where they can feel safe, wanted, and loved.
