Help Mrs. Linley

Hello! I am an integrated preschool teacher in an urban district. I presently have 25 students in my classroom, and at least 80% have special needs, language delays or are ESL learners. The focus of our curriculum is on early literacy. The vast majority of our day is spent engaging the children in various center activities, which promote the development of a firm foundation in the readiness skills needed for them to become successful readers in Kindergarten. However, since my students only attend school 2.5 hours per day, it is crucial that we coordinate efforts between home and school, to encourage parents to work with their children at home, as well. I have found the best way the parents could assist, is to simply read to their children daily. Reading daily not only helps the children increase their oral language, it promotes the development of cognitive skills, increases their attention to task and expands their imagination. Even more importantly, spending time reading with their children can strengthen the family bond which increases self esteem, the most basic prerequisite for learning. However, it has been my experience that our parents do not have the books at home to read to their children. Many of our urban families do not have the money to purchase books nor do they have the transportation to get their children to the library. In addition, many of our students come from single parent households, and the parents do not have the time to get to the library since they work all day. Finally, many of our ESL students have parents who do not speak English and can not read the books, or are too intimidated to go to the library to sign up for a library card. Therefore, I am proposing a grant to start a lending library in my classroom. I feel this is highly important because to increase literacy, literacy must be encouraged at home. I am asking for monies to purchase several paperback books for our library lending station as well as a package of library lending cards. Thank you! Thank you!
