Friend Bench

My students need a place sit and wait for friends to play, especially if they have none - these will serve as our Friendship Benches. This concept is great for kids! They also need soccer balls.

My Students

Bullying has become an ongoing issue, and those who are less likely to play with others due to the fear of ridicule, may sit here and find a friend who is willing to come and solicit their friendship- The Friendship Benches! This truly inspires altruistic gestures and raises the esteem of others!

Our school is in a high-poverty area, and as such, many of the social skills that are taken for granted - sharing, cooperation, kindness- are thought to be signs of weakness and ridiculed.

Having a Friendship Bench is a powerful visual and a wonderful opportunity for both the shy and the reluctant to be solicitous and find new friends. Children who need friends to play with at recess simply sit on the bench and wait for someone to come along and offer a chance o play. Students who see these children have an opportunity to offer friendship and this mutual win-win helps to spread the practice of kindness and compassion. Children are intuitively kind, but in our area, have been saddled with so much trauma, that kindness has become an anomaly. The Friendship Bench gives children a safe space to exercise their cooperative side and also, a place to be courageous to ask for help. The Friendship Bench also provides a quick visual for teachers and other staff at recess to gauge behavior.

My Project

While not used specifically y in the classroom, the overspill from the experiences children both engage in and see and hear from the Friendship Bench may very well carry over into the four walls when children return from recess. Conversations and thoughts on paper, perhaps even writing can be influenced by the children's thoughts around the participation with the Friendship Bench, or just the mere knowledge that such as an option exists. Knowing that there is a safe place to express ones feeling of loneliness or altruism allows students to be more comfortable and collaborate with both their feelings and actions in a positive way. Children who are settled and relaxed in their classroom learn better and the notion of safety go a long for the children in our population here at MLK Elementary. Parents and other volunteers on the yard at recess also have a direct indication of how their or other children play, and can intervene and also, allow the independent social growth to soar.

Donations will fund this pricey addition to our premises.

We cannot afford extras- such as a bench and having the bench makes our yard more aesthetically pleasing. Sadly, education is funded in ways that are not equitable, and those schools who need the most often are in areas where the property tax supplies the least. Such is the case in our school, and the kind donations of others will help to slightly level the playing field. Every child should attend a well-heeled school.
