My Students

My students have a yearning to learn, but don't feel represented in what they read. Often times, they open the text and do not see themselves in what they read and that leads to frustration.

My students loved being able to read The Hate U Give and are eager to jump into the poetry within Long Way Down.

Convincing freshmen that poetry is wonderful can be tough, but I think they will figure it out for themselves with this book.

My Project

Students in today's technological world have a hard time processing their thoughts and emotions. In class, I try to find resources for them to both learn from and enjoy. However, we have a huge lack of poetry to choose from that will excite them and have them actually want to learn.

I'd like to change that by bringing Long Way Down into the classroom so they can read poetry that they can relate to and see themselves in.

They will be able to grow their own language skills with the help of the many examples of figurative language found within the book.
