My Students

I believe it's important for children to learn in an environment where there are living things. I had a small aquarium in the classroom for many years that I purchased, however they are not making that model any longer and the light mechanism broke, which leaves the tank not very fun to view.

I teach at a Title I school in So.

CA., and approximately 85% are English Language Learners. Their parents are mostly from Mexico, El Salvador, India and Vietnam. Many of my students are first generation born in the United States. My school is located on a busy main intersection in a neighborhood surrounded by low-rise apartment buildings, gas stations, a Fire Station and many local retail small businesses such as auto repair shops, ethnic eateries etc.. On a typical day in the classroom, we hear traffic noise as well as fire engine's sirens throughout the day. My students are 2nd graders who live in the immediate neighborhood. School is a huge part of their lives, not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and physically. We offer the children free breakfasts and lunches not only during the school year but in the summer as well when they are on break. We also house a community outreach/parent center which reaches out to provide other services and much needed items.

My Project

A 20 gallon aquarium would benefit my students in a many ways. It would be a wonderful calming resource in the classroom that the children would enjoy viewing. It would provide them with the immeasurable opportunity to develop a sense of responsibility as they would be feeding the fish daily and helping me take care of the tank. It is also a wonderful learning experience. It is one thing to read about freshwater fish, it is another to have them in your classroom and observe them daily! One of our units in Language Arts involves our students in reading and learning about species of animals that change as they evolve. The aquarium would give my students a first hand opportunity to observe the life cycle of freshwater fish.

I believe that having something so special in the classroom sends a message to students that they are important.

It helps create a sense of community more quickly within the classroom with students caring for it, and taking pride as they do. It also gets parents involved in the classroom, which is always good. Parents often will volunteer materials, expertise or just time to help out with the maintenance.
