My Students
Paper, paper, paper! We need writing journals for all the creative writing we'll be doing this year! Add to that some decent watercolor paper for illustrating stories or for art projects, and we're set! A decent stapler and hand sanitizer round out our needs for a productive, healthy classroom.
My 26 students attend a wonderful public school in a small, Alaskan town tucked in the mountains and near the Gulf of Alaska.
My students are a diverse group--coming from remote villages deep in the heart of Alaska, the lower 48, and even Mexico. Our school is high poverty, and our needs are great. Despite the needs, my kiddos are engaged and motivated learners. I do my best to make the classroom a cheerful, welcoming place where students learn through hands-on activities.
My Project
Perhaps the request for writing journals and watercolor paper can speak for themselves, but you may wonder about the hand sanitizer. We had so much flu last year that many kids missed weeks of school. I am trying to keep the classroom healthier this year, and the school does provide Lysol wipes for desks and doorknobs, but not hand sanitizer. I would also like a power stapler for my 2nd graders to use to decrease their frustration with the clunky and unreliable school-issued stapler in my classroom. With germs out of the way (sanitizer) and frustration eased (decent stapler), my students can spend more time learning!! This year, I would love to have writing journals so that they can look back at work they've done and see their own growth and improvement. It will be nice to have all their writing in one place! Finally, I am trying to do more with art this year. When we use copy paper for watercolors, it wrinkles up and curls. It would be so nice to have real watercolor paper for art!
Please help make a difference in these students' lives!
Little things help so much in creating a learning environment that supports students. I'm so excited with my plans for teaching writing this year, and journals will be the icing on the cake. In fact, our school's standardized test scores are pretty good, but we discovered that the weakest area showing up consistently is in writing. So this year we have a school-wide initiative to focus on writing. We would love to have your help!
