Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

William Ward wrote: " The good teacher explains, the great teacher inspires." After 20 years I still teach with this goal in mind. I hope to be the teacher they remember, the one who encouraged their dreams and gave them the push and tools to accomplish them.

I teach a room of second graders who are loving, active and smart.

More than 65% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. It is one of the few schools to offer all programs available in Boston. We have ESL, Multilingual, Advanced work, Regular, Inclusion, Learning Disabilities, and Autism programs grades K-6. We are a very large elementary school and as it is the case for so many schools, every year the budget decreases as the needs increase.

My Project

My wish list has materials that can be used across the subject areas. I teach all subjects and materials are always at a premium. The Rainbow reading table will facilitate the new Phonics program that our school is adopting this year. The dry erase pockets will also compliment the Phonics program and will give every student his/her own rather than sharing which makes it difficult for practicing skills. These can be used in Math when they have to work in small groups and share ideas of how to solve problems. The tablet is my first attempt at trying to bring more technology as I have NO computers or tablets and I am expected to integrate technology across the subjects. I have my personal laptop which I let my students use (very hard when you have 20-25 students). Finally, the Scholastic News subscription is a fantastic Social Studies and Science component that keeps the students in touch with current events.

Every year as the budget is more and more constricted, my imagination and creativity are challenged.

The answer is not having a lot but having the necessary and using it creatively and across the subjects. These materials will help to make learning more hands-on and interactive rather than all the paper/ pencil activities that do not follow the technological era this generation is a part of.
