My Students

We are a sixth grade team of 80 students in suburban Pittsburgh, PA. Our school houses grades 4-6 and has about 1,000 students. The sixth grade students love being the big fish in the small pond for a year before officially becoming middle schoolers. Everyone is excited to officially open the school's new STEAM room, Compass Studio, this fall. The STEAM concepts will also be integrated into many classroom lessons and activities. We love to read, problem solve and collaborate. We take pride in our learning and work hard to prepare for the future.

My Project

Our school building was built with wonderful courtyard spaces, however, these spaces are highly underutilized. The school's garden club has been busy sprucing up the neglected flower beds. The bird bath and shepard hooks will be used to welcome birds, bees, butterflies, and other pollinators to visit and make a home in or near our courtyard garden beds. A composter and Monarch Migrations Station will be added to the courtyard spaces this fall.

Classrooms can visit the courtyard to study the plants and animals in their courtyard habitats.

The addition of the two Convert-A-Benches will allow classes to sit quietly and observe the gardens, or have an outdoor lesson in the fresh air. My hope is to add more Convert-A-Benches in the near future. Learning can happen anywhere and by equipping the courtyard with materials to allow for observation and collaboration, learning can take place outside of the traditional classroom walls leading to more authentic learning.
