Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country, and although Jennifer Lopez may have walked the same streets they now traverse to get to school each morning, paparazzi are unlikely to scout the neighborhood where my students live for the elusive photo that will advance their careers. But that does not mean my students are not worthy of media attention.

Whether they are cheering on their peers during a volleyball game; showcasing their moves to win a contest at a holiday dance; configuring the team robot at a robotics competition; or reciting their original poems at the school's annual poetry celebration, my students demonstrate the talent, enthusiasm, and ingenuity people admire in famous athletes, actors, musicians, and politicians.

A camera for the school's yearbook club is a tool that will give my students the spotlight they deserve, and who knows--we might one day see photos of them dribbling down the court or performing on stage or in People or US Weekly.

My Project

What do you remember about your high school yearbook? Examining each section for pictures of you and your friends? Writing messages on the blank pages of your classmates' yearbooks before eagerly reading what they wrote in yours? Or, perhaps you were a member of the yearbook committee and recall the behind-the-scenes work that made the yearbook come to fruition. Gone are the days of taking pictures at school events followed by trips to the photo store to have rolls of film developed.

Now the photo collection occurs digitally, and my students need a digital camera to take pictures at basketball games, project fairs, college visits, softball practice, poetry slams, dances, and much more.

These are some of the many academic and extra-curricular events that occur at my school every year and which are memorialized in the yearbook published each June. Student photogs love to capture these milestones and special moments to ensure their placement in the annual publication. Having a camera will facilitate photo collection, and having a camera in maroon--our school's color--will guarantee that picture-taking is conducted with the utmost school spirit. Members of the yearbook club will take turns borrowing the camera in order to snap photos of the events and activities taking place at our school each week. In between use, the camera will rest in its case in the yearbook office until the next dance, basketball game, or poetry cafe gets underway. Supporting this project will ensure that the 2020 yearbook--and its successors in the years that follow--is filled with high-quality pictures that showcase my school's vibrant community and culture.
