Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the first time you were faced with reading a play written by Shakespeare? Many students think they hate Shakespeare before they even understand his writing or stories. It is my job to try and change their minds.

My 11th and 12th grade Exploratory Literature, Gifted and Talented 12th grade English and 9th grade Honors English classes include a wide range of reading interests and abilities.

I teach in an urban inner city high school located in a culturally diverse part of the country. The diversity of students ranges from Hispanic to Anglo to African American to Native American and is what attracted me to this school. Students in my classes come in with a wealth of information in their cultural and technological "banks", but usually are from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Often times they have not had extensive exposure to good literature or good books. My teaching style is student centered. I prefer to be the "guide on the side" rather than the "sage on the stage. My goal is to encourage all students to read and my challenge is to ensure that I am exposing them to a wide variety of literature to help prepare them for their futures in or out of college.

My Project

These books will present a clearer picture of Shakespeare's stories and reveal the craft of his writing. Shakespeare has been compared to a modern day Stephen King and we all know of his ability to scare the pants off his readers. As a teacher it is important that I find a way for students to realize that Shakespeare's tragedies are as horrific, scary, and violent as modern day best selling authors. And his comedies are as laugh out loud funny and as zany as some of our favorite comedy shows today. On top of all of that, many of our modern day stories are based on Shakespeare's writings. The movie She's the Man is a great retelling of The Twelfth Night. The Shakespeare Made Easy books have been prepared by experts who have had many years of experience in teaching the works of Shakespeare. Their interpretations will enhance the experience of my students as they read his great plays. In the end, the goal is to heighten their perception and understanding of these two Shakespeare plays.

What happens when an English teacher announces a Shakespeare unit?

We all know the groans from students far outweigh the excitement. But yet, Shakespeare is the foundation of much of our society's literary world. Even today, many authors imitate Shakespeare's writing and "steal" his story lines. Students will be able to more fully engage with his text and understand his craft and hopefully learn to like Shakespeare or at least have an educated understanding of why they don't by using these books
