Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Art Instructor. I teach Art to 11th graders coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school has 100% free and reduced lunches; we also have a large special education population.

My students face many challenges just coming to school; driving past skid row each morning they face realities everyday more real than most children their age. For many of my high school students, both regular and special education, this will be their last opportunity to be in an art class. I want them to have as wide a range of artistic experiences and skills as possible. Because the poverty index is high, (the free/reduced lunch rate is 100%), most students come to me with little or no art making experience.

This semester one of my requests is for acrylic paint and pallets to paint with. I was a painting student in college, and I would love to share my knowledge of paint with the students. The great thing about teaching art is that everyone can be successful at it and feel empowered when they do so. For my special education and low performing students this is especially true because they don’t usually get to shine as much as they do in my classroom. Art gives all students a chance to express their ideas, life experiences, hopes and dreams, which is an important part of a child's development and identity.

My students need basic art supplies such as acrylic paint and pallets to continue to use in art classes.
