Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The clay, canvas pads, markers and other materials listed will be used towards building an enriched and abundant art classroom for 9th and 10th-grade students from the Bronx. As a first-year teacher, I hope for this art room to be one where students can express themselves artistically without the expectations or pressure of traditional art making.

My wish is for students to practice creating art moved by intuition and free will.

With the items listed, students will be able to practice mixed media approaches to art-making while discussing culturally relevant art and artists. The school year will begin with a unit featuring the Bronx: Bronx native artists, art born in the Bronx, and art created in response to lived experiences within the Bronx. Having these materials will allow students to create art without facing the difficulty of a lack of resources. I am looking forward to introducing students to alternative ways of art-making while carrying culturally and politically relevant conversations!

My students are special because they are being introduced to or already belong to a very special community within our high school. Students belong to a project-based learning that centers their lived experiences, enhances their critical thinking skills, and fosters a community-centered school.

I hope with donations I will be able to create an art classroom that makes a difference in their relationship to art and how they express themselves!

I’m more than excited and looking forward to having my first classroom be one filled with critical conversations and creative art-making that engages the broader community at our high school!
