Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach middle school Humanities as well as Newcomer ELD in San Diego. We combine history and language arts with texts from around the world both literary and expository. My newcomer class is the largest in the district and helps a melting pot of students from Mexico, to Egypt, to Japan acclimate to school in a new country and in a new language.

These students are hard-working, caring, innovative, and truly the hope for the future.

As a STEAM school, we incorporate critical thinking and problem solving into our curriculum and guide students to form their own opinions and arguments based on the information given and researched. The diverse backgrounds of the students bring many new ideas to the table and foster empathy in addition to innovation.

My Project

My students are enraptured with this story of Isabel and her fight for freedom and personal identity. This novel follows Isabel as she is denied freedom from slavery multiple times and thrust into the middle of the American Revolution in New York. She becomes a spy, stealing from her cruel Loyalist masters and giving information to the Rebel Patriots. She learns to be true to herself despite the horrors inflicted upon herself and her baby sister, Ruth.

"She cannot chain my soul"-Isabel Gardener, Chains.

The powerful imagery and figurative language throughout the novel help the students visualize and remember the events of the story. They analyze the meaning of freedom and how it applies to one's mind as well as one's body. This novel also helps them learn empathy and compassion.

This novel is a great example of how we blend history with literature in our Humanities classes. Since we are starting the year in distance learning, it is vital that each of my students has a copy.
