Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my class, we believe that we are Ohana! “Ohana”means family. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. This is important because I am a third grade collaborative teacher. A collaborative class is one that has a student population that consists of both general education and special education learners.

I have been blessed to have such amazing students that are self motivated and strive to do their best academically, but struggle due to their disabilities and inattention.

My students love coming to school, however, in previous years most of them did not. This love of learning is very important, as third grade is the first year of standardized testing. These kids mean the world to me and I strive to give them the very best education possible because they deserve it.

My Project

Other than whole group time, I allow my students to go where they are able to do their best. The new area rug will be a place where my students can sit during our whole group lesson and where they will be able to comfortably work on their independent reading as well as other assignments. The stools will be utilized during small group time where my students will be engaged in hands on lessons tailored to their needs. The wobble stools, cushions, and wiggle bands will provide students with a tool to help them stay focused through movement.

Did you know that students that use tools such as, wobble stools, wiggle bands, and other flexible seating options throughout the year get to utilize these tools on the day of their standardized test?

Not only is flexible seating a big deal to keep students focused and motivated on a daily basis, but it is also a tool they can use on their biggest assessment of third grade. Do you remember 3rd grade? Do you remember sitting and listening all day? I do. As a child with ADHD, I remember that school was always very difficult for me. Sitting still and being forced to work like everyone else when that's not how my brain worked was torture and made feel inferior and resent education. I became an educator to empower all students, especially those that struggle. Not just the students that have learning disabilities but also those with learning difficulties due to their impulsivity, struggles with attention, as well as other struggles. I feel giving them the power of choice through movement in our classroom is one way I can do this.
