Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are amazing. They can do so much with so little. Our fourth grade family is made up of 21 special education and general education students from New York. My students come from a high need community that is the poorest congressional district in the United States. Our school is an outstanding community that works to educate the WHOLE student.

FREE FUN FRIDAY? Sounds appealing doesn't it? Well my fourth grade family gets free time every Friday if they can get their homework done all week long. Seems like an easy task, huh? Well not for my students. They go home everyday and face insurmountable challenges, in which no child should have to face. My fourth grade family needs something to motivate them understand the TRUE IMPORTANCE OF THEIR EDUCATION. I want to help them put school back on the top of their priority list.

Every teacher and student deals with homework. Unfortunately homework for my struggling students is not at the top of the priority list. But I have come up with a SOLUTION that works. You spend your free time at home doing your homework, you earn free time (game time) at school. Little do the students know that during this 'free time' they're actually learning some important life skills. They play a game, learn social skills such as taking turns, showing good sportsmanship, and problem solving skills. Who would have thought games could be educational and fun? Just don't tell my students!
