My Students
Laughter, shy smiles, conversation, and "Hey, Mrs. M, look what I did!" are a few of the ways my photography students enter my room every day. Since we began using photography to create art at our school, enthusiasm, has risen to new heights. That enthusiasm leads to deeper learning and I want to keep that trend going. My students have truly shocked and touched me with the depth and breadth of knowledge they have not only memorized but internalized. Each one of my students shows me something fresh every day.
I teach in the Mississippi Delta region and over 66% of our student population is on free and reduced lunch.
Luckily, our school provides as well as possible for our academic classrooms, but like most small rural schools we do not have the money to purchase the "extras" of education. We are fortunate in our curricula, in that we are able to offer a photography class. We want to take our photography to the next level, frame it, and have a show.
Ansel Adams once said, "There are two people in every picture: the photographer and viewer." Help us find viewers for these budding artists.
My Project
My students will gain valuable technical skill in mat cutting and framing, which in turn will reinforce valuable math skills and practical skills such as measuring and precision. The students will work together to decide on mat colors and cutting. They will also work as a group to decide which photographs will be framed which means they will have to work as a team and create a method of decision making for themselves. This will also enable my students from a lower socio-economic background to gain insight into different social status as well as teaching all of the students teamwork and empathy. These skills are not common and will help my students to "frame their future" in a positive manner.
