This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Fractions can often be a confusing. Numerators, denominators, equivalent fractions; all of these terms can jumble together in a 5th graders brain if they do not have a solid understanding of what a fraction is and how fractions work. One way I can support my students understanding of fractions is by providing manipulatives that they have access to throughout math.

My students currently use math manipulative bins at their work groups, and students use the tools within these bins to model their thinking or to reinforce the discussions that they are having within their groups.

In 5th grade, our math often calls for students to work with mixed numbers as students add and subtract. The fraction tiles manipulatives would help us build our math manipulative bins so that students have access to more than one fraction set when they need to model their thinking. The pencil pouches would help us organize our fraction tiles and store them flat in the math bins.
