Fraction Towers of Power

Help me give my students concrete manipulatives to support conceptual understanding of fractions. Our data shows that our students grades 3-5 consistently struggle with fractions. These tools will enable them to have increased hands-on opportunities to deepen their knowledge.

My Project

Because fractions is such an abstract concept for children, providing concrete models are imperative to increase students' knowledge of what they are and how they work. Grades 3-5 is where students first begin working with fractions. It is for this reason we would like to provide fraction towers for each of our 3-5 math classrooms to support instruction.

Students can use these tools to create visual models of what the parts of a fraction represent (numerators, denominators), fraction comparison, creating number lines, and adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions, just to name a few.

These towers will provide a necessary scaffold for all students, but especially for our struggling learners (i.e. students with disabilities and multi-language learners).

Your support of J.O.'s "Fraction Towers of Power" initiative is greatly appreciated!
