My Students
My students are really special to me for many reasons. I have a wonderful group of students who come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. Being engaged in their own learning is crucial for ensuring their success. Many of my students are unable to bring in their own school supplies. I know that they learn best through active and meaningful experiences that they can connect across the content areas and to their own experiences.
I know my students' learning style and that learning by doing is essential for them because it is so highly motivating.
Unfortunately, most of the enriching experiences my students encounter are within the school walls because my students live in high poverty situations. An organized learning environment is essential in order for my students to be able to create freely! My students deserve to learn in the best way possible and that is providing the most welcoming atmosphere is extremely important. I believe that providing them with the materials they need aides in their success.
My Project
Kid President once asked, "What are you teaching the world?" I am teaching my students that their voices matter. I am so excited to help my students execute mock elections this year for our student council program. It is imperative that students understand why their vote counts in an election process. I am currently encouraging them to find their own voices- their opinions and ideas about the politics in our country matter. Our students are the future of our nation and of our world. We must strive to foster strong leaders in our classrooms!
The understanding and impacts from this project will be remembered by students for years to come.
When students think about the election process, I want them to remember what they learned in their fifth grade class in the year 2020. I want my entire class involved in the mock election to exhibit the fact that an election is not solely about one person. Elections are about the progression of our nation towards better circumstances for all. Elections are about bettering ourselves as Americans.
Students have chosen to be campaign managers, political advisors, candidates, active voices and voters. The materials in this project will allow students to learn about what elections are, will provide a way for students to create campaign tools, and to make these elections student-led. Students will use the Apple Pencil to create posters suing Procreate on our class iPad. Students will use the Silhouette Cameo 4 to make poster materials and to make buttons. Poster boards and markers will be used for students to right their platforms on to share with the rest of the school. Please help me make the dream of providing the most amazing, impactful student council election for my students this year and for years to come.
