Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a bilingual special education teacher in a dual language school. My kindergarten students are loving, full of energy, and very eager to learn. They enjoy listening to read alouds and sharing their perspective about a variety of topics. Due to some of their learning and/or social differences, many students have difficulty sharing their feelings and thoughts in constructive ways. I would like to ask for your help supporting my students' social and emotional needs.

This project will provide my students with sensory tools to help them self-regulate their emotions, not only in school, but also at home.

Students will create calming/sensory bottles with glitter and sea animals. For students who crave sensory input, the bottles allow them to have hands-on exploration, and use their senses, without disrupting their learning.

The social-emotional books will also be great resources to foster social skills and communication. In kindergarten, we can have big feelings and may not always know how to express them. These books will forge our discussion as a form of bibliotherapy; which promotes problem solving, builds compassion, and help students develop empathetic understanding to enhance their self-awareness.

A classroom or hallway sensory path will support my students with fun movement breaks. The sensory paths will not only encourage students to work off some excess energy, that may impede learning, but it will also help students develop their gross motor skills!
