My Project

I teach a 2nd grade integrated class with both Special Education and General Education students. My students current reading levels are all over the map, having been out of school during their most formative years when it comes to learning the foundations of reading comprehension and phonics. With so many different levels of readers, it has been hard to accommodate all of the wants and needs of children in my classroom when it comes to books for providing them with quality books independent reading.

Having been a teacher for 17 years, I know that a child's love of reading develops early on in their school career, provided that they have adequate exposure to a variety of books.

I also know that without options and the ability to choose what they get to read, children can become very dispassionate about reading. Since most of our literacy time is dedicated to reading and analyzing short passages or excerpts, independent reading time is when students have the rare opportunity to become engrossed in longer stories, reading at their own pace and at a level that they can comprehend. Because of this, it is so important for a classroom to have a comprehensive library of books for students to be able to choose from.

Our current classroom library is comprised of a small variety of very old books, many of which are falling apart. My students have been half-heartedly picking through baskets of the same books, many way below their reading levels, during independent reading time. I would like to be able to add a variety of brand new books to our classroom library to get my students excited and motivated to read in order to fall in love with literature and to become life long readers!
