Fostering Math Fluency Through Literature and Games

Help me give my students Books like Problem Strings for Fluency, the Pigeon Series, a Time Timer, and interactive math games to foster a love of hands-on learning.

My Project

Math is just like reading—it’s a gateway to understanding the world and unlocking opportunities. Yet, many of my students approach math with fear or frustration, believing it’s something they “can’t do.” My goal is to change that by creating a learning environment where math is engaging, interactive, and fun.

To achieve this, I plan to integrate books and activities that make math approachable and fun.

For example, Problem Strings for Fluency offers structured problem sets that build number fluency while helping students develop mental math strategies and confidence. These sequenced problems show connections between addition, subtraction, and other operations, making math feel meaningful and accessible.

Books like the Pigeon Series by Mo Willems provide relatable narratives that engage students and highlight persistence and problem-solving—key skills for math success. These books will open opportunities for discussions about how math is everywhere and how mistakes are part of the learning process.

A Time Timer will help keep the classroom energized and structured, managing activity flow and maximizing student engagement during tasks such as playing interactive math games or solving problems. It will also support a sense of urgency and focus, especially during high-engagement moments when students are deeply involved in learning.

With your support, I can create a classroom where students are excited to explore math, develop fluency, and build confidence in their abilities. By combining literature, hands-on activities, and structured tools, we will foster a love for learning and help students believe that math is not only something they can do but something they can enjoy and grow with.
