My Project

I am an 8:1+1 special education classroom teacher, and I absolutely love my job! This is the third year of our program. We have 5 students, 2 1:1 aides, and a classroom aide. As my students are getting closer to graduating, we are learning how to be as independent as possible, advocate for our needs/wants, prepare for after-school life (focusing on life skills), and address our mental health needs.

Did you know that students with disabilities are 5x more likely to suffer from mental health issues than their typical peers?

This project aims to help my students have fun while learning real-life skills. They learn by doing - the more modalities, the better! The yoga mats are one way to address mindfulness and movement breaks; each can have their own space for their daily move and meditation. We need healthy minds and bodies!

My students learn best with hands-on practical activities. Using the cooking supplies will allow them to research a recipe, follow directions, measure ingredients, and produce a product to share with their peers and faculty. The sewing machine will be used to make pillow cases to donate to an area hospital. They will learn a life skill while giving back to their community—WIN/WIN!

I can not summarize in less than 300 words how much my crew means to me. They are so uniquely special in their own way and encouraging and inclusive when someone needs extra help or a hug. They bring me joy each day and push me to do more and be better than the day before. They make me laugh and spread joy throughout the school community. Most of all - they make me proud to be a part of their educational journey!
