My students speak Spanish as their first language who come from a variety of backgrounds, and they all bring their individual set of gifts to our classroom. They face diverse challenges related to their disability. Some of them are emerging and finding their voice, but the others are still working intensely on finding a way to communicate. Some are physically able to move independently, while others are not. They all do their best every day on learning and have fun. Students with special needs learn differently than their peers in general education. They need individual practice to master basic academic skills that others learn easily. Grasping, manipulating, and removing objects demands lots of practice.
Some of my students are emerging and finding their voice, but the others are still working intensely on finding a way to communicate... They will get there!!
The classroom needs the basic materials to prep for six students and at least 3 different box jobs to complete each day.
My Project
My students need flexible and durable options for individual learning. I’m fortunate to work with students with special needs ages 3 through 6. My students have different levels of functioning and needs, so it is important to provide specific practice for their targeted skill for them to master.
My project is based on the needs of the classroom.
Being a first-year teacher, I came to work with a box of card stock paper and the willing, but no materials at all. The classroom has materials and manipulatives (numbers, letters, building blocks, and others) to help me provide the practice for my students, but the classroom would benefit from trays, containers, and boxes in different sizes for me to prep in advance for each skill and student prior to starting the day. On the same topic, having an individual tray/box gives the student a clear scope of their personal area of work and limitation since my students have a very difficult time understanding the concept of boundaries.
The second part of the project is to provide the materials I need to produce upcoming new unit themed visuals.
I have work to do, but cannot do it alone. Please help me make a difference by providing my students' what they need to succeed on acquire the skills they need to catch up with their peers in their community.
